10 Cancer-Causing Foods You Should Never Put In Your Mouth Again

The American Institute for Cancer states on their website, “Research has shown that most cancers can be prevented. Scientists now estimate that 60 percent to 70 percent of cancers are all preventable through currently available information and simple changes in diet and lifestyle.”

With that encouraging statement in mind, this article addresses changes you can make in your day to day dietary lifestyle that will not only improve your health but help provide you with knowledge of some possibly carcinogenic foods to avoid to aid in your efforts of cancer prevention.

1. Processed Meats

From hot dogs, sausages, and bacon to most luncheon meats, processed meats contain chemicals and excessive amounts of salt that damage your health.

A study published in the journal BMC Medicine found an overwhelming association between processed meat and cardiovascular disease and cancer.

“Overall, we estimate that 3% of premature deaths each year could be prevented if people ate less than 20g processed meat per day,” explained Prof Sabine Rohrmann from the University of Zurich, who led this analysis.

2. Cured and Smoked Foods

Nitrates and nitrites act as preservatives to prevent food from spoiling, they also add color to meats.

When cooked, nitrites and nitrates change into by-products called N-nitroso compounds, such as nitrosamines and nitrosamides. N-nitroso compounds are associated with an increased risk of cancer. Some examples of processed meats to avoid are bacon, sausages, hot dogs, pepperoni, prosciutto, beef jerky and salami.

3. Microwave Popcorn

Although microwave popcorn may seem like a harmless snack to eat, it contains a variety of different chemicals that are harmful to the body. PFOA, also known as perfluorooctanoic acid, is one of the main ingredients and is known as a carcinogen. The artificial butter in the popcorn also contains diacetyl, which is linked to a rare type of lung disease when it’s inhaled.

It commonly develops in the workers of microwave popcorn factories and can only be treated with a lung transplant.

The lining on microwave popcorn bags can also pose as a health threat due to the chemical PFOA. This is one of the components in Teflon and pizza boxes. It is considered to be a likely carcinogen that can lead to cancer.

Although health experts recommend avoiding microwave popcorn completely, there are healthier versions of it that can be made, using a “Whirly-Pop” stovetop popcorn popper which includes airing the popcorn out and adding your own seasonings or flavors.

4. Refined Sugar

The biggest cancer causing food is high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and other refined sugars. You have to even watch out for brown sugar because it is cleverly disguised white sugar that adds the “removed molasses” back in for added color and flavor. In 1931 Otto Warburg first discovered that cancers and tumors both use sugars to feed themselves and increase their size. Cancer cells prefer high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) because they can quickly and easily metabolized so they can rapidly grow. Cut the sugar to stop feeding the cancer.

5. Farmed Fish

Many people make the mistake of consuming farmed fish when trying to eat healthy—especially tilapia! These farmed fish contain less healthy omega-3’s and also includes flame retardants, antibiotics, pesticides and other know carcinogens. Wild fish is a healthier option that will actually benefit the body and protect it from various illnesses or diseases

6. Sodas

Sodas are filled with loads of added sugar and empty calories. Linked to weight gain, inflammation, and insulin resistance, they also contain a slew of artificial colorings and chemicals foreign to the body.

This makes it no surprise that research has linked drinking soda to a higher risk of cancer, including pancreatic cancer.

7. White Flour

Commercially-grown grains like white flour start off as seeds that are treated with fungicide. The plants are then sprayed with pesticides, harvested, and stored in bins coated with insecticides—all of which increase toxicity. Grains are then processed using high temperatures and high speed rollers, often using chlorine oxide as a whitener. The end result is a starch absent of nutrients, rich in toxins, and potentially carcinogenic. Scientific evidence indicates that bleached white flour significantly raises the risk of lung cancer as well.

8. BPA-Lined Cans

BPA, which stands for bisphenol A, is an industrial chemical that has been used to make certain plastics and resins since the 1960s. Found in hard plastics and resins, and used to coat metal cans, research has linked BPA to cancer, infertility, diabetes, and obesity.

9. Hydrogenated Oils

Hydrogenated oils, also known as trans- fats, are a man-made product. These oils have a chemical structure that has been altered to prevent the product from going rancid in order to increase their shelf life.

The Harvard School of Public Health notes that trans fats promote immune system over-activity and inflammation and are linked to heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, among other chronic diseases. In addition to being chemically extracted from their source, chemicals are also used to mask the odor and change the taste of the oil.

10. Soy Protein Isolate

While unprocessed soybeans offer individuals an excellent source of protein, among other things, 90-95 percent of U.S.-grown soybeans, used to create soy protein isolate, have been genetically modified to withstand herbicides.

Soy protein isolates are known to contain anti-nutrients that can hinder the body’s ability to digest food and absorb the nutrients into the bloodstream. Foods high in isoflavones—which are weak estrogen-like compounds—like soy protein isolate, have also been found to promote the development, growth, and spread of breast cancers in some individuals.
